Policy Planner
There are many ways to develop a sun safe school policy. You can model it after other school policies you have, you can make it from scratch, or you can modify one of the samples provided here.
We have provided these samples in easy and convenient downloadable documents so that you can modify them as needed.
- Sun Safe Colorado has created a sample policy based on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Guidelines for School Programs to Prevent Skin Cancer. This policy is simple and comprehensive:
Sample Policy Based on CDC Guidelines
- The National Association of State Boards of Education has also created an extensive sample policy in the Fit, Healthy, and Ready to Learn School Health Policy Guide.

We strongly recommend downloading the complete policy and modifying it to fit your needs. However, we realize how hectic things can be so we've modified the policy to fit a variety of needs. Use the grid below and the feedback from your assessment to determine the most appropriate policy for you. Click on the title of the policy to download it. For example, if your school would benefit most from a policy that covered shade, sun protective clothing, and sun safety education you would click on "Policy_ShadeClothingEd.doc" in the far right column of the grid below.
